Around the turn of the century, Barvaux sur Ourthe was only a small village. The village consisted of a church surrounded by a few houses. The roads where not yet asphalted, but instead were dirt roads with worn wheel tracks. The centre came into existence in the middle of the Ardennes woods, prior to the glory days of the wood industry. The Ourthe became the road to the industrialised world around the town of Liege. From here, the wood, which was used in the mine and iron industries, could be shipped.
On the edge of the village, where the woods began a house was built for a forester. This house would later become Villa "Belle Epoque". Every autumn the locals would gather here to start the hunt, guided by the forester. The trophies in the foyer still remind us of those glory days. Later on, when the hunting lodge lost its purpose, it was sold to a dignitary, who, thanks to a series of small renovations, created a beautiful villa. Before the current owners Emile and Josephine Schrama fell in love with this house, it belonged to the old village doctor’s family. Your Welcome: Emile and Josephine are the ideal host and hostess who are guaranteed to give you a royal welcome. The dog “Lothe” makes sure it will not become too formal and the warm atmosphere remains, just as a good guard dog should. Accessibility for disabled person: Disabled persons are being catered for. The entrance as well as all accommodation is accessible for wheel chairs. Children allowed: Due to position and interior, the house is not suited for children under the age of twelve. There are a number of steps and stairs as well as balconies, which whilst providing a great atmosphere for the adults may be a hazard for young children. But children twelve years old and over, are always welcome. Pets allowed: The company of your own pet is a possibility. Our dog “Lothe” enjoys visitors as well, and therefore animal friends are welcome. But please do advise us first to enquire about the possible arrangements. |
